It killlls me that we're going to have to wait until maybe '12 to see what happenes next for Don and Betty. AMAZING post, btw. I also read that article (discovered thru tumblr). A lot of my feelings also changed when Betty married that dickwad Henry. I knew it wasn't going to end well... ergh. And things can't end well for Don and Megan... just... fucking hated that curveball. Shame since it is my favorite season despite that WTF finale.
Ugh, it just kills me IN GENERAL that we may have to wait until ‘12. Not okay, not okay at all.
OH GOD, Don/Megan, I can’t even. What the actual FUCK is that relationship?! COME ON. If that shit isn’t over by the end of the s5 premiere I will kill someone. Most of my irrational hatred of Don/Megan stems from the fact that I was a total Faye stan. SHE WAS WONDERFUL, FLAWLESS, HILARIOUS, ETC. I understand what the writers were doing. I get it. She knows Don’s ~true identity~ and he doesn’t want to be with her now/can’t trust her/WHATEVER. She was perfect and I want her back.
I mostly just ignore everything about the finale aside from Joan and Peggy’s epic “THAT’S BULLSHIT” conversation. Which should happen every episode, tbh.
# i was really peeved at you when i finished s4
# and now that i've calmed the fuck down i am back to loving you
# IT'S OKAY GIRL I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU DEEP DOWN
Gurl, yessss. I've always liked Betty but S4 really proved hard for me to continue doing so. :\ But that last scene with Don conjured up so many feeelings. Gah, the DVD release is just around the corner.
OHH, BETTY. I’ve always enjoyed Betty. Mainly the fact that she’s a mentally deranged WASP (in the best sense, of course), but I’ve loved her all the same. Granted, she has never been my ~favorite or anything like that, but I love what she brings to the show and what her character says about women/women’s issues of the era.
Then season 4 came along and I was having all these hateful feelings about her and her stupid marriage (which I STILL take issue with, but that’s a rant for another time). Half of me couldn’t stand her and the other half was screaming “NO! THIS IS BETTY. YOU LOVE BETTY!” The tides changed for me when she was talking with Sally’s therapist. Damn, that was fantastic, and was probably the best Betty scene of the season, imo. And, of course, the scene with Don. TEARS ALL UP IN MY EYES, I WAS FEELING ALL THE FEELINGS, ETC.
Part of my problem was that I shot through season 4. I was marathoning these episodes like a crazy person and Betty was acting like a monumental tool and I hated it. Afterwards, I realized that this is a journey her character has to take. I also read this incredible article about Betty’s character arc in season 4 and I found myself agreeing with absolutely everything that was said.
BASICALLY, Mad Men is easily one of the most well-written dramas on television. That we’ve seen in years, tbh. I appreciate that the writers created and continue to write challenging, fascinating, and incredibly flawed characters.
